Burn Lab
The UF Burn Lab performs research trying to understand certain unmet clinical needs.
- #1: We do not understand the mechanism of infectious risk, especially at the tissue level.
- #2: We are unable to restore a patient’s immune system to homeostasis after injury.
- #3: We are unable to predict if a patient will enter a chronic immune suppression phase.
The Burn Lab is located in UF Health Shands Hospital, physically attached to the main hospital (10 minute interior walk to the Burn Center). Personnel-wise, we are very dynamic in size, with multiple undergrads, graduate rotation students, PhD students and clinical residents passing through.
Laboratory Methods
The Lab has a core set of “belt and braces” methods, including:
- Cell Culture
- Immune Function Assays
- Transcriptomic Analysis
We have various models of burn injury and related trauma, such as irradiation and inhalation injury.
We also collect into and maintain a Burn Repository of clinical samples.
Lab Staff
Current Projects
- Defining an immunosuppressive index that predicts infection susceptibility after burn injury
- Determine the role and associated mechanisms of mTOR/PPAR axis in the innate immune cell pathophysiology observed after burn and inhalation injury responsible for susceptibility to secondary infection.
- NRF2 is insufficient in preventing pulmonary damage after burn and inhalation injury
- Immunomodulatory extracellular vesicles arise after burn and polytraumatic injuries
