About William B Weir
My name is William Weir, MD, and I am a clinical assistant professor of thoracic surgery in the University of Florida Department of Surgery. I earned my medical degree and completed integrated thoracic surgery training at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. During my final year of training, I served as the chief thoracic surgery resident.
I completed a research fellowship at the University of Michigan Extracorporeal Life Support Laboratory, where I mastered Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, or ECMO, and led research teams in transplantation and ex-vivo organ perfusion. Subsequently in 2020, I completed a fellowship in surgical critical care at the University of Michigan, further mastering the advanced management of respiratory and multi-system organ failure.
Additionally, I completed a fellowship in robotic thoracic surgery through the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. I specialize in advanced thoracic care, including minimally invasive thoracic surgery, lung and esophageal cancer, benign esophageal disease, lung transplantation for end-stage lung disease, ECMO and surgical critical care.
My primary research interests include quality improvement, lung transplantation, and extracorporeal support. I am a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs.
