Breast Cancer Center of Excellence

UF Health breast surgeons provide quality, innovative care to patients with breast cancer and benign breast diseases. We are proud to care for patients at UF Health Shands Hospital, recently ranked one of the nation’s top hospitals for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report.

We offer the latest in surgical care for breast disease, including image-guided surgery, lumpectomy, skin-sparing mastectomy, nipple-sparing mastectomy, modified radical mastectomy, sentinel node biopsy, and axillary dissection and single-dose intraoperative radiation therapy (INTRABEAM). Our surgeons are fellowship-trained, specializing in the care of breast cancer patients.

Lisa R Spiguel

Lisa R Spiguel MD

Associate Professor

Lisa R.P. Spiguel, M.D., is an associate professor with the University of Florida department of surgery in the division of general surgery’s surgical oncology service. She serves as the Section Chief of Breast surgery in the department of surgery, and clinical Director of the UF Health Breast Center.

Spiguel’s clinical focus is on the surgical care of breast cancer and benign breast disease, the assessment of high risk breast cancer patients and overall breast health. She offers the full spectrum of surgical breast care, including breast-conservation surgery, nipple- and skin-sparing mastectomies, modified radical mastectomies and axillary surgery.  She uses an oncoplastic technique to rearrange breast tissue for a natural form after breast conservation surgery.

Prior to joining UF, she completed the Lynn Sage Breast Surgery Fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Prior to her fellowship, Spiguel trained in general surgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center and earned her medical degree at Wayne State University in Detroit.

Christiana M Shaw

Christiana M Shaw MD

Clinical Professor

Dr. Shaw is a clinical professor in the division of general surgery at the UF College of Medicine who focuses her clinical efforts on surgical oncology.

A fifth-generation Floridian, Dr. Shaw was born in Florida and grew up on the gulf coast. She attended The Florida State University for undergraduate education and the University of Miami for medical school prior to completing a general surgery residency at Tufts University in Boston. She completed a surgical oncology fellowship prior to starting at the University of Florida.

Dr. Shaw is an expert in surgical removal of cancers, focusing on skin cancers and sarcoma (cancer of connective tissue). With additional training dedicated to the complex care of the cancer patient, she is well versed in the latest surgery and treatment options.

Her expertise includes surgical solutions for skin cancer including melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, adnexal carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma, as well as sarcoma. She offers sensitivity, compassion and a high level of care to her patients, and welcomes the challenge to provide cures from the most complex cases

Our breast surgeons work closely with other UF Health physicians as part of a multidisciplinary health care team at the UF Health Breast Center, which is a National Center of Excellence in Breast Cancer, accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). Our center is comprised of a key team of breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, geneticists, nurses, and plastic and reconstructive surgeons to provide you with leading-edge treatment options and the highest quality and compassionate care.

Our center ensures an accurate diagnosis by using cutting-edge techniques such as 3D mammogram, MRI, and minimally invasive breast biopsy. We offer a full range of reconstructive techniques, many of which can be performed at the same time as your cancer surgery.

We offer personalized care and treatments to optimize each patient’s outcomes, and our breast navigator coordinates care to streamline clinic visits and hospital procedures. Clinical trials are available for appropriate patients as we strive to continually improve our patients’ breast cancer survival.
