Statement regarding Anti-Asian Violence

The University of Florida Department of Surgery practices a zero-tolerance policy regarding racial violence against individuals of Asian heritage. We mourn the victims of the shootings in Atlanta, and condemn the unprovoked attacks that are another example of violence against people of color in the United States. This week’s event is yet another example of the surge in violence against Asian individuals across the country, echoing a historic precedent of anti-Asian sentiment ranging from the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act to Japanese internment camps during World War II. Our Asian colleagues and trainees are valued members of our team, and it is our responsibility to foster an inclusive, equitable environment that promotes dignity and respect.

Racism of any kind has no place in our department. We stand with you.
