Several Department of Surgery faculty were recognized by the College of Medicine for their outstanding contributions and service.
Thomas Huber, M.D., Ph.D., was honored last week at the University of Florida College of Medicine’s annual Spring Faculty Assembly.
Huber, who is the Edward R. Woodward Professor of Surgery, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the UF College of Medicine Faculty Council in recognition of his extraordinary service to our institution. He has been a leader in he department for many years, including a period of service as vice chair of surgery. Last year he was awarded his 30-year service pin by the College of Medicine.
Gilbert Upchurch, Jr., M.D., D.H.A., the Edward M. Copeland III and Ann & Ira Horowitz Chair of the Department of Surgery, described Huber as a critical member and leader of the department’s vascular surgery division.
“He’s as clinically skilled as anyone I have ever known and is one of the cornerstones this department has been built on,” Upchurch said. “No on deserves this honor more.”
Huber said he feels honored and humbled by the recognition.
“I am thankful to the College of Medicine, Department of Surgery and most importantly to my partners in the Division of Vascular Surgery for the ability to contribute to the academic literature, to educate the next generation of vascular surgeons and for the profound opportunity to care for tens of thousands of vascular surgery patients,” he said.
Jessica Taylor, M.D., M.B.A., and Martin Rosenthal, M.D., were also honored with college-level clinical awards at the assembly. Both were chosen from a field of nominees comprised of department-level honorees across the college.
Taylor, an assistant professor in the department, won a Rising Star Award. The Rising Star Award is given to an exceptional early-career clinical faculty member. Recipients are selected in recognition of their enthusiasm and dedication to patient care.
Rosenthal, an associate professor in the department, won a clinical excellence award. This award recognizes a faculty member who epitomizes excellence in patient care, is a leader in the advancement of clinical innovations and who has had deep impact on patients, staff, peers and trainees. It is only awarded to faculty at or above the rank of associate professor.
