Department of Surgery members honored at 25th annual Celebration of Excellence in Medical Education reception

Several members of the Department of Surgery were honored April 3 at the 25th annual Celebration of Excellence in Medical Education reception. The Society of Teaching Scholars recognizes College of Medicine faculty who exemplify a commitment to fostering the growth of physicians and scientists through education, mentorship and scholarship.

Eric Jeng, M.D., M.B.A., FACS, FACC, receives the UF GME Unsung Hero Award. Jeng’s award was presented by Martina Murphy, M.D.

Congratulations to Eric Jeng, M.D., M.B.A., FACS, FACC, an associate professor of surgery in the division of cardiovascular surgery, on receiving the 2025 UF GME Unsung Hero Award. This award is given to a College of Medicine faculty member who goes above and beyond their role to support education, wellness and humanism for residents and fellows.

Martina Murphy, M.D., senior associate dean of graduate medical education, said this award recognizes a faculty member who quietly but powerfully shapes the experience of UF housestaff.

“This award is entirely housestaff-driven,” she said during the award’s presentation. “Each year, they nominate a faculty member whose example and actions go above and beyond what’s expected: not for recognition, but because it’s simply who they are.”

Jeng’s nominations highlighted his commitment to resident education, his support of staff and residents, his calm leadership and his willingness to give residents expanded opportunities to participate in complex procedures. They further spoke to his empathy and compassion in patient interactions and his dedication to the physicians in his division.

Jeng said he felt humbled by the award, and that his goals as a physician and educator would continue to emphasize providing the best possible patient care while training the next generation of surgeons.

“I’m grateful to the students, residents, and fellows we train at UF because they inspire me to be better every day, but more so because they put in the work required to grow and become some of the most accomplished surgeons in the country,” Jeng said. “Their efforts and work ethic continually make me and the other UF faculty proud.”

Honorees also included Azra Bihorac, M.D., M.S., FCCM, FASN, the senior associate dean for research at the College of Medicine and a professor of medicine, surgery and anesthesiology. Bihorac was made an honorary member of the society for her many years of dedication to research and education.

Evan Barrios, M.D., a general surgery resident, received an Outstanding Resident Educator Award.

Azra Bihorac, M.D., M.S., FCCM, FASN, (left) and Evan Barrios, M.D., (right) were also honored for their contributions and dedication to medical education. Bihorac’s honoary membership was presented by Colleen Kalynych, Ed.D., assistant dean for medical education and chair of the UF Society of Teaching Scholars.

Congratulations to all those in the department who were recognized, and thank you for everything you do to strengthen our institution and profession.
