Research Day 2012

The department of surgery held its eighth annual Research Day on April 18, 2012. Ronald V. Maier, MD, the Jane and Donald D. Trunkey Professor and Vice Chair of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at Harborview Medical Center and the University of Washington, was the Lester R. Dragstedt Visiting Professor for this event. The day featured 33 research presentations by department researchers. Maier also gave a presentation, titled “Resuscitation of the Injured Patient: The Enemy of Good is Better.” Catherine Chang, MD, and Salvatore Scali, MD, both assistant professors in the division of vascular surgery and endovascular therapy, each won a research career development award for their presentations. Each award, supported by the department, is worth $25,000. Amanda LoGuidice, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the department; and Kenneth DeSart, MD, a surgical resident; both won $500 awards for their abstracts. LoGuidice won the award for “Best Basic Science Abstract” with her presentation while DeSart won the award for “Best Clinical Science Abstract.”
