Surgery 401: A Critical Appraisal of the Surgical Literature

Location: 5th Floor, South Tower Conference Room (5011)

Day: Every Tuesday

Time: 6:45am – 7:30am

Course Directors: Jessica Cioffi, MD, Christiana Shaw, MD, and Steve Smith, MD

Tools: Faculty assigned and resident-selected readings

Goals:
1. To become able to critically dissect the surgical literature
2. Learn system specific current literature, including surgical critical care
3. Learn how to publicly present and defend/refute a controversial topic
4. Improve outcome on ABSITE

Methods: Four, 45 minute sessions per month utilizing a variety of educational formats, for the residents to review, present, and understand the surgical literature. Residents should be prepared to summarize, discuss key points, discuss relevance, and note how they will practice based on the readings. Methods will include:
1. Debate format
2. Critical article assessment format
3. Presentation/Critique format
4. Summary/overview review last week of month

Evaluation: Residents will be evaluated in the following categories:
1. attendance/participation
2. ability to present materials
3. level of engagement
4. oral exam performance
5. ABSITE scores

Course directors and other attendings will be evaluated in the following categories:
1. Preparedness for discussion
2. Ability to stimulate conversation/direct the discussion
3. Knowledge of subject/ability to communicate information
